Best Multimedia Laptops / Laptop Advisor Buyer's Guide

Sometimes known as desktop replacements, these multimedia computers are ready to entertain. The screens are big, speakers clear, processors powerful, a growing number have Blu-ray drives, and some even have HDMI outputs for convenient connection to an even bigger entertainment display -- your HDTV. If music, movies, and pictures are your thing, these will get the job done in a big way. They'll even play most of your games too.
Billed as a versatile entertainment laptop, it's an apt description for
this desktop replacement. It features a comfortable 16-inch LED-backlit
screen, so it's both bright and battery saving. The innards are
impressive as well: Core i5 processor, 4GB DDR3 RAM, 500GB hard drive
at 7200 RPM, NVidia GT325M graphics, webcam, WiFI b, g, and n -- it all
adds up to "sweet." No Blu-ray drive, as many so-called "entertainment"
laptops currently have, but it does have the all-important HDMI output,
so you can hook it up to an HDTV and use it as a media server --
sometimes, 16 inches of screen just is not enough.
The Sony F series represents efficiency
and simplicity. This is a powerful computer that keeps the overhead low by cutting out some of the non-essentials. It also has a relatively modest screen at 16.4 inches, but the Sony F still comes packed with a Blu-Ray
drive, quality Sony speakers, and a brilliant screen that has the
ability to turn off and on via the flick of a switch.
And sometimes, for maximum entertainment, you need a really, really powerful laptop. This Toshiba has a somewhat gawdy design with chrome and red accents, but this laptop packs more gadgets and features
than even a James Bond movie could accomplish. Featuring huge
18.4-inch screen, there is no question that both movies and games
alike are going to come to life. Like it’s competition the Qosmio
x505 features HD surround sound, offered by Harman Kardon, Blu-ray,
advanced nVidia graphics, and Dolby technology. In the past there
have been desktop-replacements, but never have I seen a home
theater-replacement (including game consoles!) quite like the Qosmio can offer.

looking for the smallest/lightest laptop, that does not sacrafice the performance of storing/editing cannon 5D photos; interactive real time financial sites, high speed online access and memory of photos/videos. other than that I merely email, and search web. battery life isnt even that important as i am usually plugged in. i loved the write up out the small ASUS until the mention of not being able to handle photo shop or other software. (unless i misunderstood) no video games movie watching or even music file for the most part. thank you..

I would like to buy a new computer and have many programs on it relating to photography . I also have PS and PSE on it and use it most of the day. I' like to not too heavy . I have about 5,000 pictures on it at any given time. I currently have a 5-yr old Dell but am having trouble staying connected when I down-load tutorials from U-tube. What do you suggest I buy???

I'm an amateur photographer, and radiologist who frequently travels for off the beaten path for work. I need a fast machine with a high-resolution screen, large memory and ability to communicate wirelessly with ease. The laptop ideally should be amenable to video-conferencing, and also useful for entertainment such as BluRay DVDs. I have previously used Toshibas because of their reliability, Recently the Sony VAIO model VPC-F126FM/B has been recommended by a salesperson. Opinions or alternate suggestions? Thanks.

Any $600 laptop should work for you. I like Toshiba or Asus. Dell and HP are decent as well. Invest money in some external speakers too.

Is there any benefit to having HDMI if you don't want to hook the computer up to some other device?
Thanks!

Nope. HDMI is nothing more than a port, so it really doesn't matter if you won't be hooking it up.
