8.9-Inch Netbooks Going Extinct?

This week, Asus announced that they would be eliminating the 8.9-inch Eee PC models sometime in 2009, and relying instead on their 10.1-inch netbook offerings. According to Asus, the majority of their sales is coming from 10.1-inch netbooks, as consumers view the 8.9-inch models as too small in comparison.

Generally, 10.1-inch and 8.9-inch netbooks have very similar body sizes, despite the difference in the display size, so this won’t affect the overall portability and comfort of a reasonably-sized netbook laptop computer. The 10.1-inch models tend to have larger, more comfortable keyboards for typing and superior screen resolutions.

With this announcement, and the success of the 10.1-inch MSI Wind and Acer Aspire One models, it’s likely that 8.9-inch netbooks will be extinct by the end of the year. That means this is a great time to try and score a great deal on the remaining stock of 8.9-inch netbooks, if you are so inclined.

Though they’re small, I definitely think the 8.9-inch Eee PCs are worthwhile models, especially at these low prices.

10-Inch Acer Aspire One Introduced

Acer Aspire One

Acer’s “Aspire One” line of small, compact netbooks has made quite an impression on consumers, allowing Acer to overtake the similarly named Asus as the leading name in netbook sales. While the previous Aspire One models were limited to an 8.9-inch display, the new Acer Aspire One AOD150 has upped the ante with a 10.1-inch LCD display that can reach a resolution of 1024 x 600.

The AOD150 Aspire One will feature a 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 processor, 1GB or RAM, optional support for 3G wireless connectivity, a memory card slot for Secure Digital High Capacity cards, and three USB inputs. It also boasts a spacious 160GB hard disk drive.

Despite all the upgrades, the AOD150 Aspire One manages to keep the cost low, where netbook prices should be. All this can be yours for only $349. Stay tuned for more updates and reviews of the Acer Aspire One.
